Peer Counseling Program in Retrospect

The Peer Counselor program started in 1980, with a total of 10 recruits being spear-headed by one of the guidance counselors, Ms. Evelyn T. Pahang, under the directorship of Fr. John J. Phelan S.J. The recruitment and the selection process during then were not as formal as the presently practiced process, but it was not without requirements and qualifications. Initially the program required that volunteers have a good academic standing and commitment to the tasks at hand.

The training was held at the old Guidance office which was located at MR18. The pioneering batch was given the chance to make modules and run them afterwards. However, unlike the present training practice which usually lasts for 3-5 days housed in one venue, the first peer counselors would receive their training on their free time.

There may be a world of difference in the training and selection process of the pioneering batch and the more recent batches. However, the
